It finally snowed. I had planned on running to Sessions Mountain this morning, but when I saw the snow I decided to change plans. I ran the Wild Rose Trail. I made fresh track all the way up. Instead of coming down the same route, I ran down the ridge past the radio towers. Then I headed back along the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. I passed a lady who was out walking her dog. Since there was only one sets of tracks in the snow, I'll bet she was wondering "Where did he come from?" It was a great run this morning. I love running in the snow.

Mueller Park Trail. Wet, Wet, Wet. When I started the run it was raining, and it rained the entire time. I got completely soaked. I was hoping that as I got higher in elevation that it would turn to snow, but that was not the case. The trail was soft packed snow for the first two miles, then got a bit sloppy for the next half a mile. At 2.7 miles, all other tracks stopped. I wanted to go to Elephant Rock so I headed on. The next .75 miles to the rock was knee deep snow. At the rock, I turned around and headed back through the snow. Running in knee deep snow in January while getting rained on. Is that dedication or complete insanity? The rain really destroyed the trail. The rest of the run back to the car was a sloppy mess. Despite the weather, I still love that trail.

This morning I ran the Sessions Mountain Trail across from the Bountiful Temple. For those unfamiliar with this trail, it is an uphill grind. The average elevation gain is 19%. The hill was slow and the snow didn't help either. I made it up 1.5 miles before it was too deep and I turned around. When I got back down, I had some time left so I ran up Hobrook Canyon 1 mile. After running up the mountain, the canyon seemed like an easy run. Total elevation gain for the run was 2541 ft.

I ran the Bonneville Shoreline trail up to the radio towers and the dropped down into City Creek. I went up City Creek Canyon for a few miles. As I was heading up I saw an entire herd of elk about 250 yards above me on the hillside. I counted ten of them but I think there were more that I couldn't see because of the scrub oak. I see deer almost every day, but it is not very often that I see elk. I have never seen that many that close before. It was super cool.

The run today was good. Parts of the trails were snow covered and I had to make fresh tracks. Most of it was only a few inches deep, but it got up to eight inches deep in a few spots.

For those of you who have been wondering if I had dropped off the face of the earth . . . no . . . I was actually on the other side of the earth. I was on an extended business trip to South Korea. I ran a lot while I was there, but decided not to blog my runs for safety reasons. I am back home now and it is good to be back.

Running in Korea was great. There are many trails in the mountains (actually more like hills than mountains).  The trails were very nice and had signs at the intersections. Of course, the signs were in Korean, so they weren't much help to me. I saw several Koreans out walking and hiking on the trails. There were a few runners, but not many. The Koreans are extremely friendly and usually greeted me in Korean as a passed. There were a few who even greeted me in English.

It was really exciting running and exploring trails on the other side of the world. Here are a few of the pictures that I took while I was out.

A wide trail that went all the way around the lake.

They built a stair case up a steep section. How cool is that.

Here's a map of one of the trail systems.

Which way should I go?

I went this way. I think it was a good choice.

I found these guys at the top of one of the mountains I summitted.

Doesn't this look like a fun place to run?

Me, while out on one of the trails.

Mueller Park Trail.

Striders Running is putting on their "Catch me if you can" challenge. Last year it was Malan's Peak. This year it is Mueller Park. The cool thing about this challenge is that you can run trail trail anytime in the next two month's. The winner gets $150 and a pair of shoes. Second and third place also get a pair of shoes.

My time this morning was 1:01:20. 36:12 up and 25:08 down. It is not going to be the fastest time for the challenge, nor is it a PR for me. My PR on this trail is 55:30. I hope to break that during this challenge.

Met up with Kam and Russ this morning. We had a great run on the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. I had to bail early because we are going to Idaho today for a family reunion. Did the second half of the run by myself. Thanks for the great morning run guys.

Thank you, Matt. It was good to see you again. We need to get together more often than every 2 years.

Up in Island Park, Idaho for a family reunion. I ran up a dirt road for 4 miles and then came back. Looking on a map later, the name of the road was  Blue Creek Rd.

Hey, I didn't know you were blogging again. Good to see you back Twinkies. You should join us for some trail runs.

Thanks Scott. We should get together. If you are running any sections of Wasatch thru Davis County, let me know and I will see if I can join you.

Made a second attempt on the Mueller Park trail for the "catch me if you can" challenge. According to the post on Striders blog, my previous attempt put me in third place. Today's time was 2:16 faster than last weeks. My time up was 35:44 and the total time was 59:04. Which is good enough for 2nd place. That is if they haven't received any faster times that haven't been posted yet. I think that I can still shave another 5 minutes off of my time. 3 minutes faster going up and 2 minutes faster coming down.

Legacy Parkway Trail. I tried to run slow and keep things super easy. That is difficult to do when the body wants to run faster. I am running the Bair Gutsman on Saturday, so I wanted to stretch out my legs, but didn't want to over do it.

I ran this race last year for the first time. It is an extremely challenging uphill grind followed by an extremely technical downhill run. It uses the same trail for up and down. I had somehow forgotten the pain and signed up for the race again. The started the race two minutes early, and I was just coming out of the restroom. I started out at the back of the pack. The first 1.5 miles is paved road. This got the runners spread out a bit. The we hit the trail The next 3.5 is a dirt trail up the mountain. Some stretches of it are very steep. Heading up I saw Matt Williams at about the same place in the race that I saw him last year. Passing him was Deja Vu. I made it up in decent time, but my legs felt dead at the top. There was one aid station at the top. After refueling I felt better and started bombing the downhill. I passed several people on the downhill. Towards the end of the trail I tripped and went down hard. My hand was bleeding and my knees were scratched up. I was able to maintain a stronger pace than last year and finished in 2:53:06. Which is 2:32 faster than last year. Matt Williams also beat his time from last year. It was tons of fun.

My work has been crazy busy lately and I haven't been running for 2 weeks. But today I was able to hook up with Kam and Tara and ran the Mueller Park Loop. The temps were nice today. I led up to Elephant Rock and the pace felt good. Kam led from elephant rock to Rudy Flat and I dropped back a bit. The down hill is always my favorite and I opened it up on the dirt road a gained some distance on Kam and Tara. It was a fun morning.

I'm getting back at it. I have been taking some time off, but want to get running again. The trail was great this morning. I saw lots of other runners.
